Back to School 2015-2016

Welcome to our Kindergarten class! We have a fun and exciting year ahead of us.   We are going to learn and grow so much this year! I can't wait to meet all of our new students at orientation on September 4th at 9:00 AM.  I'll be working hard this week to get our classroom in tip top shape for all of our new friends!

I hope you received my postcard and I can't wait to see you! 😀

Long Overdue Updates

Hello!  I can't believe how long it has been since I have updated this blog.  We have been extremely busy in Kindergarten.  It is amazing to see how much these little ones have learned since September and we still have 70 more days of school left to learn and grow!  Here is an overview of some of the amazing things that are happening in our classroom.  Below you will find some pictures of our class in action!

Reading and Language Arts
Wow!  We have really been busy with Literacy in our classroom.  We have been working on the following:
-Using our reading strategies to figure out unknown words in books.  I will be sending home a bookmark with all of our strategies so you can practice them on home.
-We learned how to make connections while reading or listening to a story (text to text connections and text to self connections).
-We learned how to make predictions
-We are learning how to sequence and retell a story.
-We learned all about the characters, setting, problem, and solution in a story
-We have been learning new sight words each week.
-We have just completed learning all of the consonants in the alphabet.  Now we are moving on to the vowels!
-We are learning about how to read CVC words (consonant/vowel/consonant)
-We are learning about the digraphs th, ch, sh, and wh.

Writing
-We are constantly learning how to write stories using phonetic spelling.  That means that we spell the best we can!
-We have learned how to use the word wall to write our sight words in our stories.
-We are always learning and practicing how to use an uppercase letter at the beginning of our sentence and use proper punctuation at the end of our sentence.
-We are learning that we must use a finger space in between each word in our sentence.
-We have written personal narrative stories, opinion stories, and all about stories so far!

Math
-We have learned how to write and count numbers from 1-20.
-We are learning about numbers that are larger than 20 now.
-We know how to count by tens and fives all the way to 100.
-We learned how to add and subtract numbers and will be reviewing that all year.
-We learned about how to compare numbers and determine which is greater and which is fewer.

Science
-We learned about living and non living things
-We learned about our five senses
-We are learning about motion using our  unit called Balls and Ramps.
-We did a blubber glove experiment when we were learning about penguins.  We got to feel what it would be like if our hands were covered in blubber!  That was so much fun!

Social Studies
-We are always learning about the particular holidays and special days.  We learned about Martin Luther King Jr, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington, just to name a few.
-We held our mock election in our classroom.  We learned how to write a speech and how to vote for a person to be president.  We learned about what presidential candidates do when they want to be president.

We have celebrated the 100th Day of School and Dr. Seuss' birthday in the last month!  What fun we have had!!

We put our hand in ice water after covering it
with petroleum jelly.  The water turned into beads!

Now we know what it's like to be a penguin!
